A new way to control stock (OR Little things and Big things)
So Rightcontrol -- what's it all about?
Rightcontrol was developed originally as a bespoke engine and based on our first client's operation, an Apple equipment supplier and authorised repair engineers to trade and retail, stock also consisting of refurbished non-Apple equipment.
That equipment would be ordered in from various suppliers around the world, and when it arrived, stock would be taken to engineering to audit its condition. This audit would be stored on the Rightcontrol inventory system so the report could be read by Sales people to see what they are selling.
Initially, we set unique ID and printed barcodes to assign onto each peice of equipment, but susbsequent clients also had stock consisting of new items.
We decided that some new items were of less significance compared to a larger item, which needed individual tracking, like an expensive laptop compared with a PCMCIA Network card. The network card was easily replaceable in the event of a return, but the laptop would need re-auditing and perhaps replacement with another similar item.
So we conjectured that stock line storage would happen in two ways:
1) Single Tracked Items - Any items which required to be individually tracked, like a laptop pc, or a widescreen television, or a car etc
2) Multiple-Items - repeat items like a can of beans, a PC mouse or a bag of bolts, could be tracked using their batch code, or by the use of a collective ID code, usually a manufacturer's barcode will do.
Items singularly tracked are normally items you would need to keep track of its history more so than items which are subsidiary or accessories. This simplified the stock entry process so that 100 pcs of KB/Mouse can be entered in seconds. Singular stock entry is still a rapid input process, as most of the information is held in the purchase order pertaining to said stock, so only the audit of the item, or entry of individual serial numbers, would be required.
Using this process we can keep a much more accurate account of what has happened to an individual item to track its history, keeping an internal account of processes it has been through, such as Sales Orders, Returns, Repairs etc. but does not require record keeping of items which are not worth the bother of tracking, like a three-pin pc cable.
Traditional accounting systems tended to lack this ability, grouping stock into collective item lines with no possibility of identifying individual items.
Admittedly, our system does not include advanced accounting features, as we were not about to rewrite the wheel program; SAGE, QuickBooks and MYOB all provide excellent tools for accounting and sales/purchase ledgers, but all had less than adequate Stock Control or live stock to sales order features, so we included the ability to import and export data into Comma Seperated Value files (CSVs).
Our software evolves all the time and we are a fast, flexible company, and we like existing clients making suggestions for features they'd like to see, or functionality they find beneficial to their particular working environment, so we can include and expand our feature list. Sometimes customisation costs, but we pride ourselves in providing a correct solution to our clients, and allow them to improve their own business workflow, without the software being a hindrance.
Software which complements your business is only good for your business.

Efficient stock control allows you to have the right amount of stock in the right place at the right time. It ensures that capital is not tied up unnecessarily, and protects production if problems arise with the supply chain.
